A construction crew in the south-central Chinese city of Changsha created a 30-story hotel in just 15 days.
The construction company, named Broad Group, claims the new Ark Hotel has been tested to resist an earthquake up to magnitude 9.0. Much of the construction was done with pre-fabricated materials made off-site and then placed into the building like puzzle piece. Pre-fabricated pieces are usually doors, windows, wall panels and trusses for the roof. For example, a wall panel is made by pouring concrete or other material into a standard, flat mold, then cut into panels that can be easily shipped throughout the world. Making pieces in standard units limits waste and reduces construction time. While pre-fabrication helped speed up construction time, for this hotel, workers put in about 12 hours per day.
